Christophe,

In NOMADS, when entering the alternate iolist, you must specify if the variable is string by adding the $ sign.

A normal embedded iolist is used by opening the file like : OPEN (1, IOL = * ) ".....
The alternate embedded iolist is used as in : OPEN (1, IOL = ^ ) ".....

You can also specify the alternate iolist when reading your data.
READ (1) IOL = IOL ( 1 : ^ )

    IOL( 1 )
        -- yields the default IOLIST
    IOL ( 1 : * )
-- yields the normal embedded IOLIST
    IOL ( 1 : KEY )
-- yields the IOLIST used to create the external key
    IOL ( 1 : ^ )
        -- yields the alternate IOLIST

Best regards,

Tino Vanholst
